Using DIRectory is an easy way to keep track of what you have on your disks. DIRectory displays the disk contents as icons like the Finder. The Hierarchical File System as well as the old Macintosh File System is supported. The printed report shows the disks folder structure and displays the icons. DIReader is a FREE part of the DIRectory Package. DIReader can read DIRectory files but it is not possible to catalog new disks or to get printouts. Also included in the DIRectory Package is DIReader DA, a desk accessory with which you can search through all your online disks and a selected DIRectory Disk Catalog.
For more detailed information please refer to the DIRectory User Manual or the short manual below. Some parts of this text refer to DIRectory only.
Manual
The purpose of this program is to display the contents of your disks as icons. The icons have the same location inside the folders, and the folders have the same size and location, as under the Finder. This way you get the convenience of having all your disks 'online', combined with the usual icon display, without having to swap disks. It is possible to get a report printed on paper.
Ñ How to open a disk or a folder
Double-click the disk or folder.
Ñ About Merge╔
Merge makes it possible to concatenate another DIRectory file to your disk directory. If you have only one disk drive both the source and the destination file should be on the same disk to avoid extensive disk swapping. You may specify that you want the latest version if disk duplicates are found, otherwise duplicate disks are not replaced.

Ñ About General Options╔
It is possible to extend the information that is read from a disk. The version information for files can be read. It is also possible to get icons for files on HFS disks mounted by MultiFinder if Icons Extended is enabled. This will also work for volumes without a DeskTop file. This extra information can be read either for all files or only for files within the Print Filter.
Ñ About Transfer
You can launch applications on any disk in the directory file by double-clicking the icon while holding down the command key.
Ñ About MFS disks
The folder structures of MFS disks are reconstructed by DIRectory.
Ñ About MultiFinder
DIRectory can be executed under MultiFinder. However you might get default icons, not attain the Get Info comment texts and the folders on MFS disks because the DeskTop file containing the information is locked by the Finder under MultiFinder. This is the case for disks which are mounted by the Finder. Unmount them from the Finder and reinsert them to DIRectory while holding down the option key to get all information. HardDisks should be logged without MultiFinder or with Icons Extended enabled since they are always mounted by the Finder.
Ñ System requirements
